What is there

The museum stands at the far end of Mizuki Shigeru Road. It opened in 2003 and was rebuilt from the ground up, reopening in April 2024 with rooms on the artist’s childhood in Sakaiminato, the war in New Guinea where he lost his left arm, the years of street theatre and rental manga, and the long success that followed. Original drawings hang beside the picture books, and the yokai gallery sets his pictures of the creatures beside the tales they came from.

Why here

Mizuki’s yokai pictures drew on two kinds of record: the picture scrolls and picture books of the Edo period, and the folklore collections of the 1930s that recorded yokai by name and habit without a picture. For the second kind he invented the faces, and his faces became the standard. The museum shows the drawings; the articles on this site show the records they started from.

Yokai you will meet

  • Nurikabe 塗り壁 — The drawing that gave the recorded wall its face.
  • Ittan-momen 一反木綿 — The flying cotton of the Kagoshima records, as Mizuki drew it.
  • Konaki-jiji 児啼爺 — The crying old man of the Tokushima record.
  • Nurarihyon 滑瓢 — The old gentleman of the scrolls who became the yokai chief in Mizuki's work.
