The hunter's son told not to make a sound
What the record says
An old hunter named Iwamatsu Tarikichi told how, at sixteen, he had gone hunting with his father on the southern foot of Daitō-dake, caught nothing, and been caught by a violent storm at dusk. His father carried him on his back. A little after seven they came out into an open snowfield and his father whispered, "The yuki-onna has come. Whatever you do, don't make a sound." A woman in a pure white kimono, pale-faced, tall and thin, was walking toward them. His father turned and ran down through the snow to the lights of the village. Later he explained: if you yield the road to the yuki-onna, or back away, or call out to her, she takes you and you die. Shut your eyes and run — there is nothing else to do.
