The one-eyed man who asked what the boatman feared most
What the record says
In the twelfth month a boat making for a harbour on Suō-Ōshima met a headwind and then stopped dead. A man with one eye tried to climb aboard out of the sea and asked, "What in this world do you fear most?" When the boatman answered, "Making a living," the man vanished. It was an umi-bōzu, people said.
