What the record says

A tengu lived on the mountain on the border of Mie and Shiga. Going up to burn charcoal on moonlit nights, people heard its flute and its singing. A man who had gone up to shoot game spent the night in a charcoal hut; in the dark a clear voice called Ōi!, and when he answered it the mountain suddenly went wild and pebbles came raining down. The young men locked arms and chanted the nenbutsu while the hut shook and a great tree snapped. In the morning there were no pebbles on the ground and no tree was broken.
