神隠し(かみかくし)
Kamikakushi
Spiriting away: a sudden disappearance blamed on a god, a tengu or the mountain.
When a child vanished from a village, or a young woman from a house, and no body was found, the word was kamikakushi, “hidden by a kami.” The village searched at night with drums and lanterns, calling the name; what had taken the person was said to be a tengu, a mountain spirit, a fox, or the mountain itself. Some came back after days with no memory, or with a story of being fed and carried through the air.
Tōno Monogatari (1910) has several: a girl taken under a pear tree and seen years later in the mountains, grown wild, saying she had been made the wife of something she could not describe. The 2001 film Spirited Away is Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi in Japanese.
